Ontario LHINs Privacy Project |
|
Sub-components CHIS-Led on Behalf of Erie St. Clair
The pursuit of an electronic health record is rooted in evidence which indicates that both patients and clinicians benefit from having access to timely, accurate, secure and comprehensive patient information, regardless of where a patient presents for care. However, while the sharing of information amongst those in a patient’s ‘circle of care’ is beneficial, it must be done with the utmost consideration and respect for the protection of personal health information. In Erie St. Clair, privacy and security is a key priority area and is recognized as a critical element to supporting the implementation and adoption of emerging eHealth initiatives among health service provider organizations and individual practitioners.
To ensure that providers across Ontario understand their legal obligations for privacy and security and have tools in place to ensure compliance, a number of LHINs have collaborated to develop a comprehensive yet practical approach to privacy and security. The project, led by the North Simcoe Muskoka LHIN, involves CHIS, on behalf of the Erie St. Clair LHIN, taking on a significant portion of work to support this overall initiative including the development of a privacy toolkit for use by LHINs and health service providers.
Upon completion, the materials developed through the project will be available across the province to support each LHIN in the delivery of eHealth initiatives and to empower health service providers to address their own privacy and security issues.
By helping all providers to enhance their privacy and security programs, clinicians and patients can be assured that personal health information being shared within the circle of care is protected and secure. |
